Armenia has a significant solar energy potential. The average annual amount of solar energy flow per square meter of horizontal surface is about 1720 kWh
(the average European is 1000 kWh). One fourth of the country’s territory is endowed with solar energy resources of 1850 kWh/m2/year.
Solar thermal energy
In Armenia solar thermal energy is rapidly developing:
- The private sector is importing both as parts for solar water-heating systems, with a view to their subsequent assembly, as complete sets. Currently, the use of solar water-heating systems in Armenia is not only to ensure energy savings, but also has become cost-effective.
- In the framework of deferent charitable programs of International financial companies solar water heating systems have been installed in many settlements such as nurseries, residental houses, medical facilities.
- In Armenia solar water heating collectors with total surface area of 1,38 - 4,12m2 are produced. The collector with 2,75 m2 total surface area produces 120-160 litres hot water per day.
Solar Photovoltaic modules
Up to now in Armenia different photovoltaic demonstrating modules have been installed with small capacities.
Polymeric photoelectric inverters with 9.8 kW capacity and total surface of 200m2, made by Germany and USA technologies, are assembled on the roof of Armenian – American health centre /Institute of Mammography, on the roof of UN office Solar power plant has been installed, and a Solar power plant was built in Spitak by means of Swiss grant. In Gyumri Center for care of people with multiple disabilities by Austrian “ Caritas” Organization a solar PV power plant with around 100 kW installed capacity was also built.
For the development of solar energy, Fund for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency of Armenia realized the project “Assistance for Development of Actual Solar PV Energy in Armenia” by the assistance of World Bank and Global Environmental Facility grant. The potential for development of photovoltaic industry in Armenia was studied in the framework of the project(download here).
Renewable Energy Investment Plan for Armenia was approved in the framework of the “Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Program (SREP)” of the Climate Investment Funds, in accordance to which SREP resources are being allocated to develop up to 110 MW utility-scale solar PV.
Currently the preparation Program of utility-scale solar PV Plant(s) construction is being realized by the assistance of the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development
